Took the plunge and purchased it. Been running it for a couple of days now and am liking it. It runs all my programs and I was able to keep my old desktop and quick launch bar. Still learning it, but it's nowhere as bad as some have said. I even like the new "start menu". Price was good too at $76 with free overnight shipping.

I assume that you did an "in place" upgrade?

It's always good to get feedback on Windows8, but I've been hearing a great deal of negative feedback. Especially in regards to the start menu having gone missing! That's been there, since (what?) 95?

Well they're going for more of a touch screen feel, and the start menu kind of kills that...

You can download a widget that brings one to Windows8 though.

Heh, I'm still using Vista! I may upgrade to 7 at some time but I'm not even sure there's a good reason to do that.

Way back when, I used to enjoy playing with the operating systems themselves (be they Windows or Linux) now I don't seem to have the time or interest.

Now it's a case of 'using' the OS to run programs. Guess I'm just getting old.

I went from vista to win7 and I can tell you win7 is much better
I am still waiting on deciding on win8.

Any specific reason as to why?

One was the permissions to run certain applications went away.
Also I had issues with devices especially usb dropping out then come back without rebooting. Mouse.etc
Also I have to reboot less often due to when the system hangs up.
And since it is 64bit it uses all of my 8gb of ram.

A good enough reason in itself!


My Vista at work is painfully slow, so slow in fact (with 4gb ram) that I took advantage of a Norton £10 offer to speed up my PC.

Some friendly chap from the Philippines took over my PC for about an hour - apologised for the long delay - and left it exactly as it had been an hour previously.

When Windows is new, it runs like lightning. Six months later, it doesn't want to know.

That never used to happen when I ran Linux systems
Although (I must admit) it was a nightmare to install anything 10 years ago. Ubuntu these days is way better.

cleaner, faster, better... Even M$ reported that vista was a mistake and recommended people migrate to W7...

I started on this pc from dell with Vista, the speed improvements of Win7 where like night and day... Stability was remarkable, I went from a BSOd like every night to nada...

Dang Gizmo... I actually had to think about what BSOd (Blue Screen of Death) stood for.. I run 64 and 32 bit versions of 7 on several machines and have to admit you are right between the two.

In Vista's defense though the 64 bit version didn't have nearly the issues the 32 bit one did, but I think that was simply because it was built as a 64 bit OS then made backward compatible to the 32 bit systems that most had at the time.

I only run x64 now; all of my ram on my machines are maxed... I'd run Ubuntu x64 on here but I can't due to running raid on my disks and using hw raid vs software so it kind of peeves the installer lol

Yeh, yeh, yeh.... I have done system building, upgrading and repairing for years, so I try them all. Aside from personal preference, the long-standing Vista hate campaign was nothing but a joke perpetrated by a few and it went viral. I have 5 operating systems on my main machine (XP, Vista, Win7, Ubuntu, Salix). In real world comparisons, I see no measurable difference between Vista and Windows 7. In fact, my conclusion is Win7 is nothing more than a glorified Vista. There are some 'internal' changes which I am sure are titillating to the 'geeks' and justifies their virulent denigration of Vista.

Truth is, I've been running Vista as my main OS since Vista was released. I have had virtually no major problems with this system whatsoever. It runs everything and anything I throw at it and it is extremely fast. My Windows 7 system with less on it is not any faster. I have never had to "allow permissions" for one single application; UAC was turned off on first boot-up. Contrariwise, I had to install Virtual Machine on the Win7 system to be able to run a couple of legacy apps. There is nothing wrong with Win7. And do recommend it to those who want to upgrade from XP. It still demands lots of RAM vs. XP (just like Vista), it has the same hardware driver issue (just like Vista), etc.

Lastly, my extremely fast Vista system is simply a well thought out and balanced machine that runs like a clock: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (3.0Ghz); Asus M2N-E ATX; Mushkin SP DDR2 800 (4 gigs); WD 1TB WDC WD 10 02FAEX (3 other WD drives, 2-250 and 1-500); ATI Radeon HD 4670. As you can see, it is 'dated' and no 'extreme' components. This 'horrid' Vista OS has been my favorite OS of all time and has served me well for 6+ years (pre-release versions to the present). I have no interest in Windows 8 nor any need at this time to upgrade. If I live long enough, perhaps I will be forced to upgrade to a future OS due to application incompatibility with my Vista system. But until such time, I'm sticking with and loving Vista, much to the amazement of the "Lemmings" out there. hahaha.

A lot of great info, thanks guys. Personally, I like to stay with the latest versions just because. I had no problems with Vista and hate XP. Windows 7 didn't really give me any major grief and Windows 8 is still running great. I very rarely used the old start menu so don't miss it at all. Most of the time I use the desk top ala previous versions and go to the new interface to run some of the apps that I downloaded. The only thing I don't like is the fact I don't see any way to connect to the Internet except from the old style desk top. I don't have my systems set to auto connect due to the fact I use two different connections, so need to be able to choose which one to use based on me security needs.

I have one of the ultrabooks with win8 on it... not a big fan of the changes yet.

It does take some getting used to. I don't know if it's how Win8 interacts with Firefox or a FF issue, but I had to role FF all the way back to v13 in order to use it without constant javascript errors. I also run the new Aurora for FF and not a real fan of that one.

So far no real major issues with Win8, so I'll just plod along and see what happens. I do know there will not be a Windows8 phone in my future. It will most likely be an iPhone and if not that, an Android based one.

I didn't install window 8 yet now because I have heard that there are some error as like skype error, restart error, and some other. so please tell me all these error has been removed from window ?

Two years later; I bet all you guys are running Windows 8.1 now, and loving every last byte of it!

Personally, I'm a Microsoft fanboy who prefers Android-based gadgets and wouldn't touch IE if I didn't need to actually use it at my job.

Still rockin W7 on all PC's that I couldn't roll out XUbuntu on .

I have 8.1 on one laptop, and I still hate it.

My mom bought a new laptop, sat and nagged me to put W7 on it from W8 lol

To hopefully save you some time by not having to install an older/less secure OS, make this two changes:

1) In Windows 8.1, Right-click on the task bar, choose Properties and select the "Navigation" tab.



2) In the Start Menu > Apps screen, sort the display "by category."

Now your W8.1 will for the most part, display like W7 at boot and on the desktop, except it will have the improved security and optimizations of Microsoft's current OS.

Microsoft OS v6.0 = Windows Vista
Microsoft OS v5.1 = Windows XP

In Windows 8.x, you never have to run a "Modern UI" application if you don't want to... except for its Modern Start Menu. A quick and easy solution for people who are confused by the Modern Start Menu is to simply install "Start8" for them.

Start8 is like a crutch, for people who find it easier to move backwards than it is to move forward.

I upgraded my windows 8 to 8.1 then back to windows 8. All I can say is that I like windows 8 than 8.1

Well all I can say after the initial 8.1 update there are more to come and I like the 8.1 version better after the secondary updates.

I have the same version of Windows, but I have to say I'm not really happy. Once there was electricity problem and my PC was disconnected and then when I start my PC again I get message that I have to upgrade windows( I switched off automatic updates ) , second time I start my PC as usual and get message that I have to refresh my windows, I click OK, After this every software, program installed by me was deleted after " refreshing ".Best option for me was Windows XP
