If I currently have my threads installed in /abcforum but I want it to be in /xyzforum what would I need to do to accomplish this?
What I've tried: I tried going into control panel and in paths&DB settings I changed all the paths from acbforum to xyzforum, then of course renamed the directory abcforum to xyzforum, but I got sent to my 404 not found error when I tried to access the forum using the URL with the new directory in it.
Is there something else I need to no? Changes to the config file maybe?

config.inc.php you will modify paths and urls there up to 8 changes.. but they will be obvious

Yea if I understand you
You either need to do one or the other.
Edit the complete config.inc.php file and change all of the paths in the file or if you can access the control panel.
Goto every page and verify the settings and re-save one by one.
One way or the other you may still need to re-save in the cp. Because some info is just in the config file and some info is placed in the db tables
it would be the same as the how to move site faq.

all path / urls can be edited in one place.. config.inc.php no db tables are updated on a site move. i do this all the time.. just edit ONE file only caveat: is if you have people who have posted links HARDWIRED in their posts.... to the old forum... then you're screwed and have to DB query that part

You might also edit your .htaccess file and put this in: redirect 301 /old http://www.yourdomain.tld/new
redirect 301 /old/ http://www.yourdomain.tld/new/
All requests to the old URL will instead direct to the new URL.

Memory recall tells me one item you can't change in the cp is the sessions folder path. That would require a file edit in cofig.inc.php.
