Hi all. One of our members has seen his PMs go from 300 (our limit) to about 380. He said his PMs have been splitting up:

Quote
Individual messages within threads prior to 2011 have been split into multiple separate threads thus bloating my inbox. This happened sometime in May this year.

He is the only one to have this happen as far as I know because nobody else has mentioned this issue.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

I never heard of such a thing.
More details would probably help.

First there are three PM settings.
Total # of posts allowed in a private topic
Max # of private topic participants
Total # of private topics allowed

What do you have set for them.

Also is it possible that they are duplicate PMs?
Caused y some upgrade error.

Maybe you could provide screen prints of some examples.

Hi Ruben.
Total # of posts allowed in a private topic - users 50
Max # of private topic participants - users 5
Total # of private topics allowed - users 300

Will ask for screen prints as I told member that more information will be required.

Thanks.

If you obtain his permission you could login as him and do it yourself.

Also I assume this person is only a member of the users group.
Or is he a member of multiple groups.

I'm not sure how that would be possible; but short of playing around in the database we won't really be able to diagnose it; I think this is the type of issue that'd be best for the official support to look at via the support desk (since for us to really diagnose it we'd have to see the users mysql data for their PT's to see supposed PT's that where "Split".

I thought of that but I want to see what he thinks the problem is.

Messages could be split if a user account that was included within the message conversation had been deleted.

Not just...
Quote
Delete member and do not alter posts. Ownership will be set to Anonymous with an Anonymous name of: USERNAME

but deleted as...
Quote
Delete member and delete all posts. If there are any replies to a post by this member, they will be attached to the post's parent. If the user's post is a topic, the entire topic will be deleted.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but just quickly browsing through the cleanup code within admin/dodeleteuser.php does not account for attaching Private Messages to the root. (near/below line 198)

As a side note, you may also want to run a reindex/rebuild on your tables from within sql. The server /might have/ had a hiccup and could be garbling the PM database. It's not out of the question - but it wouldn't hurt to do it... after making a backup, of course.

EDIT: Have inactive users recently been purged?

Will check right now.
Great detective work!

Thanks.

Not much to go on with that screen print.
Post numbers may have helped.
But anyway.
the postings are so old that it possibly could be anything.
ID242 eluded to a issue but it could also be simply a merge user issue.
Or a upgrade issue.
The odd part is the replies are out of order for recipients.
1 then 2.
Then 2 and 1.
Could simply be a matter of the other user removed themselves from the topic and just replied from memory of the subject and added RE:
Duplicate subjects are allowed

Not knowing the history of what versions you upgraded to when and why!

I know you are on the current version.
But the user is stating that it is from 06/2009.
So it could be a past bug fix that has been implemented and fixed.

Anyway.
I don't see a real way to fix it other than a try at what ID242 suggested.
Make a backup. Run the re builders and see if the issue improves.

Probably not though.

Thanks for your thoughts. I have a feeling this is an isolated situation as I still haven't heard from anyone else.....
