Hi, an upgrade question to secure the forums MySQL
I run my forum on a VPS linux server and MySQL version is 5.6 and its only valid to feb 2021 The back up I use is set up as incremental meaning it only does backup on the data that has been changed.
I see in WHM control panel MySQL/MariaDB Upgrade (Step 1 of 6) first step is to choose version 5.7 and click next..
I wonder what I should think of when upgrading to 5.7 except closing the forum and do back up.
I think I'll issue a ticket and ask the host to do it so I wonder what I should ask them to do.
Sorry if this is not a direct UBB question but I think that you guys have done this and knows how the forum can be affected or not..
Thanks for your input

Thanks for the input, I guess going from 5.6 to 5.7 is the natural way to go. If you have any advise what to think of is highly appreciated. Thanks

I think you should upgrade your server as much as possible as long as it is compatible with the scripts you run. You don't want to be stranded with a EOL application. I had one large site on a dedicated server the owner turned off upgrades years ago. It was so long a duration there was no tool to upgrade anymore. So it became easier to just migrate to a new host.
In fact site one php is getting old in the tooth so when I have time I will upgrade .

If I ask the support crew at Interserver to upgrade from 5.6 to 5.7 what should I tell them to do in order to be safe so my forum database works properly after the upgrade?
I would be very interested and thankful for this info.
Info to Interserver helpdesk:
Please upgrade my MySQL from 5.6 to 5.7
1, tell me when I shall close the forum 2, proceed with a full database backup or a full britbike.com backup database included. 3, proceed with the upgrade 4, inform me when upgrade is success fully finished so I can reopen the forum and test it
I sure would like you to guide me what to say to the interserver support crew.
Thanks Morgan

Not much more to do.
Other than confirm they did not change the database prefix. Which if they do you would probably need to update the user name and in includes/config.inc.php to point correctly to the new database path and user.
But I doubt that will happen.
But if it were me I would make my own backup of the database and files for CYA

UBB.threads is a basic web script, we assume that you have a fully functioning web server within the ranges of recommended PHP/MySQL versions. Web Server configuration or troubleshooting out of the scope of user to user support for our web script.
The required versions, as of this writing are: PHP 5.4 or higher MySQL 5.5 or higher MariaDB is also compatible
When performing an upgrade of system services it is advised to have a full backup for disaster recovery; but this should be something that you keep on top of regardless of if you're having a system update applied or not.
We are currently running UBB.threads on several bleeding edge systems which include PHP7.4.11 and MariaDB10.4.14

FWIW, Server Information from some of our snapshot servers as of 2020-10-15: -- If you are in a legacy environment where you only have older PHP or MySQL versions, UBB.threads also works with a PHP 5.4 and MySQL 5.5 or newer enabled website, but these versions have reached official End Of Life and as such may expose your site to security vulnerabilities. Here’s a letter you can send to your host; copy and paste I’m interested in running UBB.threads PHP Forum software < https://ubbcentral.com/> and I was wondering if my account supported the following: PHP 7.4 or greater MySQL 5.6 or greater OR MariaDB 10.1 or greater Nginx or Apache with mod_rewrite module HTTPS support Thanks! This was shamelessly copied, modified, and reposted here from the open-source WordPress software's requirements page at https://wordpress.org/about/requirements/. Thank you, WP Team

Thank for your replies I currently run my forum using MySQL Version: 5.6.49 PHP Version: 5.6.40 Isaac, I guess that the question in your reply is from someone who wish to start using a UBB forum software, I already use one and wish to upgrade the MySQL database so my question needs to be different to the host. This is what I am thinking of now but I would be happy if I could have it reviewed and possibly suggestions of changes. This is what I am thinking of so far Hello IS support: I run a website forum currently using MySQL 5.6.49 which is near to its end of life and I wish to upgrade to MySQL version 5.7 Can you please help me to do the upgrade ? Or give me instruktions how to? When/if you do will there be any changes in or will all paths, username, passhord etc be the same?
1, Before you start please alert me so I can close our forum first! 2, after my ok for you to go a head please make full backup for disaster recovery before you begin? 3, Please inform me when the upgrade is successfully finished so I can reopen the forum and test it. I understand if I can't get more help here and if that is the case do you know of any other forums where i can ask?

I login to WHM and it reads MySQL/MariaDB Upgrade (Step 1 of 6)
MySQL/MariaDB is a commonly-used relational database management system that is a core service on most cPanel systems. This interface allows you to upgrade your MySQL/MariaDB server to a newer version. cPanel will automatically upgrade your MySQL/MariaDB installation to newer point releases (the third digit in the version string) because these upgrades involve little risk to your users’ data. Upgrades to new major releases (the first two digits in the version string) are more involved because there is a substantial risk of data loss. This interface attempts to walk you through the major release upgrade process.
Information
Although in-place upgrades are generally safe, you should always perform a full database backup before you begin the upgrade process.
Please note that downgrades to previous versions are unsupported. After you upgrade your system to a newer version, it may be impossible to switch back.
Current Version
MySQL 5.6.49 It may be a straight forward thing to upgrade and it reads above "This interface attempts to walk you through the major release upgrade process." Wonder if I just should do a backup in Cpanel and start the process... hmm.. dunno what to do really. Thanks for reading about my worries..

Isaac, I guess that the question in your reply is from someone who wish to start using a UBB forum software, I already use one and wish to upgrade the MySQL database so my question needs to be different to the host. The second half of my post was directed at both new and current forum owners who need a starting template for asking their host to upgrade them to the latest versions of the software UBB.threads uses. This would include you in that group of people. It is a template for you to modify as desired. The first half of my post was to demonstrate that UBB.threads works on an End Of Life version, as well as bleeding edge versions with either Linux or Windows. I understand if I can't get more help here and if that is the case do you know of any other forums where i can ask? Im not sure what part of your questions went unanswered by Ruben, Gizmo, and myself. 1. close your forum 2. make a backup. 3. upgrade your server software 4. load up your forum. 5. if all looks good, re-open your forum. done. Your web host should be able to help you with #3. Often it is seamless and only requires an email or telephone call to contact them to get the process started. They can also provide assistance for backing up your database before any changes are made.
