I'm under the impression that a PHP update can be done on the fly. I'm able to switch between PHP versions in Cpanel but when I go from 7.4 to 8.1 our UBB 8.0 forum seems to break - all we see is the footer.

What are my next troubleshooting steps?

I should point out that these PHP extensions are installed per https://www.ubbcentral.com/doc_install.php :
php81-php-common
php81-php-gd
php81-php-mbstring
php81-php-mysqlnd

There doesn't seem to be a php81-php-mysqi package available, and I don't see it on our PHP 7.4 installation either.

What are your PHP logs looking like?

If there are no errors have you tried clearing the header and footer includes to see exactly where it's breaking?

D'oh - I should have started there, thanks Gizmo! Cleared headers/footers, switched to PHP 8.1 (the highest version my host currently provides), and things came up as expected. I'll re-add the header/footer items one at a time to see where it broke.

EDIT: spoke a bit too soon, Control Panel wouldn't open. Will do some troubleshooting on that front.

It sounds like it's trying to load cached data, try clearing your cookies out of your browser.

I'm glad that you were able to get it working; the CP issue we had in testing so we had a pretty good idea on what was happening with the cached data (which was funny because Isaac had the issue and I did not, so we just kept back and forth testing things lol).

For those following this, we also had an issue where changes couldn't be applied in CP, the following error was showing up in the logs.
Turned out there were duplicate EOF; lines in a Custom Island that wasn't even in use.

Got error 'PHP message: PHP Fatalerror: Uncaught Error: Undefined constant "EOF" in /public_html/forum/cache_builders/custom/portal_box_67.php:10\nStack trace:\n#0

Our footer had a copyright reference to the current date where
<? echo date(Y);?>
had to be changed to
<? echo date('Y', time()); ?>

And this might be a bug:

Got error 'PHP message: PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected string content "", expecting "-" or identifier or variable or number in /home/sundan21/public_html/forum/scripts/stickpost.inc.php on line 83'

Had to change line 83 from:
$config['TABLE_PREFIX']}ANNOUNCEMENTS
to:
{$config['TABLE_PREFIX']}ANNOUNCEMENTS

Definitely a bug, thanks for the quick fix, there will be an 8.0.1 before too long with some changes including this.
