It does, by default I believe, allows the first user to select their own password. It will still mail confirmation of the registration, but I don't think the email server should kill the process.
Ignoring the error, have you tried visiting your boards and logging in?
If the mail thing is screwing stuff up, you might be able to comment out / remove that option from the adduser.php file.
Not sure if this looks like the trial version. Been over a year since I "tried". <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> It might look a little different.
Look for this in adduser.php and remove or comment out:
<pre>// -------------------------------------
// Now we need to mail them the password
if ( ($Loginname) && ($Email) ) {
$to = $Email;
$header = $mailer -> headers();
$subject = "{$ubbt_lang['PASS_SUB']} {$config['title']}";
$msg = "{$ubbt_lang['PASS_BODY1']} '$ip' {$ubbt_lang['PASS_BODY2']} \"$Loginname\". {$ubbt_lang['PASS_BODY3']} \"$pass\". ";
if ($config['verify']) {
$msg .= $ubbt_lang['DOVERIFY'] ." {$config['phpurl']}/verifyemail.php?verify=$Uid-$key&Cat=$Cat";
}
elseif ($config['userreg']) {
$msg .= $ubbt_lang['NEEDAPPROVAL'];
}
mail("$to","$subject","$msg",$header);
}
</pre>
