I recently purchased Threads and converted from Classic. The upgrade and install seemed to go well, but I am having one problem (so far) and hope someone can help.

When I register as a "new" user (to test my registration process), the system sends me an email to verify my email address as expected and then I log in. No problem so far. However, when I log in as a new user, there is a PM icon flashing, but when I click on the icon, there is no message in the inbox? Is there something I missed in the set up that it needed to send a PM to a new user?

You may be missing user#2 the main admin for the board (this sometimes happens with Classic imports if something isn't done quite right when the board is setup).

Try this query from the SQL Query section of the Admin menu:

SELECT U_Username
FROM w3t_Users
WHERE U_Number = 2

If that doesn't return any results, we need to create a user#2 (the first user in threads).

Register a new user - you migth wish to use a generic "BoardAdmin" type name. Grant that user Administrative Privledges.

Now run a query to change that user to user#2 - substitue the Username below where I have 'BoardAdmin'

UPDATE w3t_Users
SET U_Number = 2
WHERE U_Username = 'BoardAdmin'

Now the Welcome PMs should appear. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Now that you mention it, I did notice that when I imported my Classic board, my user (Basil) ended up being User#4 (even though I was #2 on my Classic board). I'll try what you suggest and report back. Is there a way to make my user #4 = User #2 ?

I took your advice (sort of). Rather than create a new account, and since I wanted my account "Basil" to be the only admin account, I found every field in every table that looked like it contained the user ID and I ran UPDATE queries to change "4" to "2". That seemed to do the trick. I am now user #2 and new members are now receiving the PMs like they should.

NOTE: I am going to be clearing all my tables and re-importing my classic data once I have threads set up the way I want (so I'll have the latest data from classic). I am going to write a small PhP script (with HTML interface to enter server and DB info, old uer name, new user name, etc.), to do the queries in one operation and make the change from "old user" (in my case 4) to new user ID 2. If this is a common problem, do you think the folks at UBB would be interested in my little script to make available to others who are converting from Classic who might have this problem?

Yeah, that'll work - as long as you changed the user ids everywhere, then that'll do the same thing. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Well - it's an auto incriment field - so it shouldn't happen, but what happens is people don't quite follow the instructions and end up registering a user in threads, rather than just importing. So the user #2 get's used before the classic import starts.

If you nuke the Users table- (empty it out) ... make sure you leave user#1 (the DONOTDELETE user - this is a placeholder for anonymous posts and users who have been deleted. Then reset the auto-incriment number, so the next user created would be user#2. Then the first user classic imports will be user#2. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

the problem that usually causes it, is that the user number doesn't get re-used, and people install threads, create a user or 2 before doing the classic import. I think the classic import instructions tell you not to register a user under Threads until after the classic import.

But if you write any scripts to fix it that you'd like to share - the place to post them would be www.threadsdev.com

I'm not sure what happened in my case, but I was very careful NOT to create a new admin account, so I was surprised when my Classic user #2 became User #4. I wrote a little php script that does an update query on all the tables and fields that contain any form of user id info and caused it to update all occurances of "4" to "2" , it seems to have done the trick and no problems so far.

Thanks,
Basil

Thanks for the info. I was very careful NOT to create any users until my Classic import was complete, so I'm not sure what happened. Just to make sure I'm clear, when I nuke my threads databases, I should NOT delete the user number 1 (The one with a user name of "DO NOT DELETE"? Can I nuke all other entries in all other tables, then do the import script again? Or are there any other things I should leave alone in the threads tables?

Thanks,
Basil

Hrm... then that's odd. Not sure what goes wrong there with the importer.
Yeah, you can nuke everything, but you must save user#1.... which should have a username of DONOTDELETE. Then you can reimport everything. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
