I've finally got my forums almost working but now when I am in the admin menu and try to edit config settings I get config.inc.php is not writeable, so you will not be able to use this tool until the permissions are changed. error message. Can anyone here help?

Did you chmod it to 666? If not, this is the problem.

Sorry to be dumb, but how do I do that? I use WS_FTP. If I right click on a file on the server I get a menu which uncludes CHMOD, but if I click I just get a series of radio buttons allowing read write execute settings for different classes of user. Any clues?

It'd be the top 6 boxes checked - and it should show a numeric value = 666.

Thanks everyone for your help. I discovered that my my hosting service would not allow me to change permissions when hosted on a Windows server. I have moved to a Linux server and have now managed to get everything up and running. Lots more questions, however, which will go on different threads. Thanks again for the help.

99% of the time this is the case. Your host was far from unique in this regard. Windows has truly horrid file and permissions management, especially remotely.
