In anticipation of the inevitable release of UBBThreads 6.5, I am wondering what is the best way to update an existing installation, e.g., 6.4.1?

My main concern is that I have quite a number of great hacks added which not only have some of the default files modified, but I also have quite a number of new ones, e.g., Templates for individual stylesheets, etc.

So, perhaps I could ask about my concerns individually:

1) Can the update be uploaded as a package and then unpacked/unzipped so that all the folders and files are set in their proper place and order? This would be a plus for those of us who have dialup or slow upload speeds. If so... HOW?
2) Does updating to a new version overwrite existing files?
3) Will existing hacks which have additional, non-default files cause problems with an upgrade?
4) Is it best to save the existing installation for reference? If so, HOW?

And, any bits of wisdom from those who are experienced in updating an existing and hacked Board which I haven't brought up would be immensely appreciated.

Answer: Currently I do not think a tar file is offered.

2) Does updating to a new version overwrite existing files?

Answer: If the zipfile contains a file with the same name as your server, and you upload it to the same dir, then of course it will overwrite it. Thing to remember, a server is much like your PC, so most rules of file storage etc, apply.

3) Will existing hacks which have additional, non-default files cause problems with an upgrade?

Answer: With the above in mind, of course they will need to be re-added, IF they are compatible with the new version. Check with the author(s) first.

4) Is it best to save the existing installation for reference? If so, HOW?

Answer: Yes, learn how to make backups via ftp. Not trying to give you a short answer, but daily FTP proceedures should be the first thing you learn when making a site <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> If you are unsure, see your webhosts FAQ's to see how they do things.

Yeah, pretty much every hack/mod needs to be updated and/or adjusted for 6.5 as the changes were extensive.

Also - you'll have to upload ALL of the files with 6.5 as the new installer will verify that you've uploaded all the files before it'll let you procede. So indeed you'll need to start fresh, and re-add modifictations as needed.

The following won't help with yesterday, but will help with tomorrow.

Log all your hacks, including the following information:
  • file name
  • old code vs. new code
  • purpose of the hack

After new install/update you can compare what you did and decide if you wish to do it again.

By all means, keep a copy of the original file and the previous hack.
