for some reason some members can't post a message.. when they attempt to post they get the following error message:

"The host you are trying to send the input from is not a valid host."

Thanks for that link..

many of my members are getting that error message.. "The host you are trying to send the input from is not a valid host"..

this problem wasn't an issue with ubb 6.4.2 so why is it now an issue with UBB 6.5 ?

This is a firewall issue. More than likely you had the referer check turned off before and now it's turned on. So, either the it needs to be turned off in the config file or the user's that are getting the error need to alter their firewall so it doesn't mess with the REFERER variable when on your site.

Yes, you can turn the referrer check off in the Control Panel. There, go to Master Settings: Primary Settings. On the General tab, expand the Advanced Options (by clicking the + sign). Check the box after "Disable HTTP Referer Check?" Then save the changes.

I was having the same problem trying to test 6.5 before upgrading. Glad I found this post. It says in the config to "only disable if there are many users having problems due to firewall". So tell me, what exactly is the purpose of the referer check? Does disabling pose a security issue? If not a security issue, then what benefit is there in leaving it enables. And last but not least, there are so many firewalls out there. How can I leave it enabled and give instruction to those affected on how to correct the problem?

Thanks

Hi there: The purpose of the referrer check is mainly to check the legitimacy of the poster, and protect your board from spamming bots, etc. There's no security threat, per se, in disabling it, but I'm not sure about what you could have users do to troubleshoot the problem on their firewalls... Let me see if I can gain some insight on that for you. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
