I'm having an issue with my moderators and their editing of users.

I have a group defined called "Penalty Box", where they have read only access to the forums. I use it as a halfway house between regular users and banned. Problem is only I can assign people to it. None of my moderators can do that. Thing is, they do have the ability to assign folks to another group that's unrelated to that.

I logged on as one of my moderators, and saw that he had access to add/remove to the main "Users" group, as well as this other one I'm talking about, but not the "Penalty Box" (or any of the 6 or so other groups I have set up).

I can't understand why they would have the ability to add/remove to this one other group, but not any of the others. I looked through all the moderator, group, and forum (stabbing in the dark) settings, looking to see if there's something I missed.

Can someone elaborate as to what I'm doing wrong here and how I can get around this problem? Danke.

Moderators can only add people into and out of groups that they themselves are members. Otherwise they might see hidden groups etc... that you woulnd't want them to see. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> (like the admin group). Admins can add people in and out of any group.

Damn. I really want my moderators to be able to add people to this group.

This group has read only access in everything. What would happen if I made them part of the group, and kept their moderator rights? Would that override the "read only" in this Penalty Box group I want them to be able to edit people for?

Joe you can try MattyJ, he's really good at solving these kind of issues with a mod or two.

Joe, he just has to be a member of the group to add people into it. If it's a read only group, as long as the mod ALSO belongs to a group that can reply etc.... then they will have the higher of the permissions. So if the user group can reply/post, the mod will continue to have proper access. To put people in penalty, they need to be added to the pentaly group, but removed from any group which allows them to post (ie the user's group).
