My friend is thinking about upgrading his board to the 6.x series but he noticed that all the 6.x series have ultimatebb.cgi where his board running 5.x has Ultimate.cgi if he were to upgrade can he just rename the ultimatebb.cgi to Ultimate.cgi?

Oh no! Its much more complicated than that.

If your friend wants to upgrade, he'll need to follow these instructions: http://www.infopop.com/support/ubbclassic/UBB6_upgrade_5_to_6.html

There is a Move Kit in the Zip file from Members area that should be used <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

And just to ensure it is completely understood. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Changing the filenames of the UBB's main scripts is COMPLETELY UNSUPPORTED!!!!. While technically possible (isn't anything <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ), it is way more trouble than it is worth. Either use the move kit or implement redirection at the server level.

(The move kit referred to is in the help/movekit directory of the 6.x zip files and contains files for Ultimate.cgi and forumdisplay.cgi)

Great guys thanks for the responses. Ok lets say he does go to 6.x route and does the movekit thing. When they go to his site (example) http://www.thesite.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi with the movekit in place instead of running the Ultimate.cgi it would automatically forward them to ultimatebb.cgi? Is that how it works?

That's correct - visiting Ultimate.cgi with the movekit replacement will forward you to the right place.

An example: https://www.ubbdev.com/ubbcgi/Ultimate.cgi
