If I ran two UBB Classic sites, and mirrored the file structure "live", would this provide a "redundant" system in the event of provider failure on one side?

I suppose I'd have to avoid overwriting the 1 or 2 files that set directory paths and domain name, but other than that, what do you think?

Alternatively, has anyone done this "for real"?

Hi there:

We'd warn against this, as it probably involves network file systems, which we generally have a problem with...

Let me see if our programmer can give some more details... You might want to consider UBB.threads if you need better failover support, though.

As Kate said, this is probably a bad idea.

There are a few ways of mirroring content. The first and "easiest" is to just use a network filesystem on a third server. However, in our experience, UBB.classic and most NFS implementations do not get along well. One customer recently implemented an eight server load balanced cluster using NFS alone on Linux, however we can not support this configuration officially.

Another option would be running something like rsync every few minutes. Unfortunately, this would lead to the possibility of catching the data files in the middle of a write, and thus could lead to the backup copy containing corrupted data.

So, basically... Don't do this. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

If you need a proper failover solution, then you should indeed look at UBB.threads. It's safe to run the code itself on NFS, and you can use MySQL's failover/mirrors/slaves. Do note that you'll probably need to alter the configuration of the UBB.threads board(s) if you need to suddenly redirect to another MySQL server. You could also consider the MySQL Cluster software, currently in beta. We haven't tested UBB.threads with it, but we don't anticipate problems. (Assuming you also want database failover and not just web server failover.)

NOTE: I posted this as a reply to this thread as my ? is reletive to this authors same issue.

I am planning a parents community board on my site in the near future. I currently have one hosted by proboards..eh. I'd rather it be by infopop UBB Classic.

What if I installed a new directory " cgi-bin2 " and installed the cgi-bin files for my second board that way? I have the software downloaded. as most of you know I am preparing my youth site new board so we can get rid of our proboards.com style which is also cgi.

As far as non-cgi files, well on my sever my friend created a directory called " ubb " My old webmaster created my trial UBB in directories cgi-bin as you are supposed to do, and then put the non-cgi files in a directory called "board". Will this work for me as far as installing a second board on my sever? I want to have UBB Classic for both of boards, and I hate phpbb..lol

For both my parents community, and my girls only site which I have a woman designated to run it.. ha I wont even be in charge lol.., Should I just install those on seperate severs to be safe so I don't run the risk of corrupting or overwriting anything on my prize pride and joy home site? That would ruin my day if I lost any of my custom hop ups images and work on my current home site board which I have told the members of my temporary board that I hopefully will have it open by this comming friday night.

Any suggestions? Do I need another site for both other boards?

As long as the CGI scripts are able to execute properly, you can place the cgi & variables files in a diredtory other than cgi-bin. Or you can put the files in a sub-directory, such as cgi-bin/board.

Just be sure that the different installations in the different locations have their paths & URLs set so that they are pointing to the proper locations. Use whatever naming conventions you need to to keep them separate. As long as 2 licensed boards are running on 2 separate domains, with each using their own software (not shared), you should be fine.

Well, of course I was planning to keep the two domains seperate if I chose to go with a seperate domain for each one.

But, I am trying to figure out how to put them all accept the girls site on my current server. If I install a second copy on my current server for the parents community, will it overwrite my current license and mess things up, even though I run them both on their own software and their own directories?

The license is not tied to the installation in any way that matters, just as long as the URL to the board is provided with the license information. You can update this information once you log in to the Member Area.

Just to clarify - you will need a license for each installation of the software... If you install a second & third board, you'll need a second & third license.
