hi all.

loooong story made short (kinda).

my web host (horrible easyspace.co.uk) has gotten bad these past months since they were taken over by another company.

my board has been down since last thursday with the "file locks" software error you can see at http://www.multimadrid.com/cgi-bin/jersbbucgi/ultimatebb.cgi

i finally got through to the fools today after 6 days of having my board down only to be told that they have "improved" their servers across the board and that the new system does not accept the file locks command (does not support "flock"). this is shared hosting on a unix server.

so, they say that your software (UBB used by millions of people) is no longer compatible with their servers (their servers no longer support the file locks command) and that i will have to change software to one that does not use file locks. apparently, they did not screw it up, i did (NOT!!!)

i have not touched a damn thing!!! they changed the server and made the server incompatible with your software, not the other way around which they would have me believe. UBB is fine, it was working on their server for 3 years before they began changing things.

sorry for venting, to the point.

i am out of there (as soon as i solve my problem) and am going to change to Eve hosting but i will not be able to even visalize the board nor my control panel as they refuse to put things back the way they were, even temporarily.

i need to know if there is a way to disable the file locks commands in the UBB classic so that their server will not show the file locks error and will execute the gci scripts and i can see my board and most importantly, my control panel.

if there is no way to disable file locks in the UBB code, does anyone know another solution so that i can see my board again (even temporarily).

i have thought of just uploading it to another unix server that does support file locks but that would be costly as i would have to pay for the new host which i really would not use for more than a few days.

also, is there any way to see the style settings for the UBB forums via the files themselves. i would like to copy the code for the headers and footers that i have now for when i get onto Eve hosting since the export to Eve does not conserve them.

much appreciated.

saludos,
jer...

You would not be able to remove the file locking from the UBB without seriously overhauling the inner workings, in addition to causing your UBB to go totally nuts with corruption issues, especially on a busy board.

Your host has gone insane, and frankly, you should find somewhere else, IMO.

If you don't want to go somewhere else, you could always convert to UBB.threads which is PHP/MySQL based.

As i recall EasyHost has moved all of their data to network attached storage (which is entirely insane) which is also incompatable with the UBB for sanity reasons... In short, you'll need to find a new webhost or as ron said, migrate to Threads if you're "in love" with easyhost (i'd personally take the former than the later).

Dependant on the amount of traffic you may also want to give some thought into a virtual private server or shared dedicated (as large sites can be a resource drain and a vps can sometimes cut the overhead of shared hosting).

Oh, and if you are looking for reasonably priced VPSes, check out http://www.ev1servers.net/english/vps_series.asp

My site is actually hosted there <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Yeh I've heard some great things about EV1; in fact when I need to move on to a VPS they're who I'm planning on moving to <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> ...

Er, there has been a note that a switch to Eve is in progress. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Unfortunately, as has been noted, there's just no way to turn off file locking in UBB.classic. However, a bit of good news - our own servers run UBB.classic fine, so you can move your UBB to your Eve site for the import process. As you'll be inside the control panel for the export/import, you can then grab your styles, header, footer, etc.

hi all, you guys rule!

yes, the move has been decided sine the "hijos de puta" (bit o spanish nastiness there) at easyspace are not to be budged.

Ron, i HATE easyspace with a passion as they have ruined my board. even if i were to swap to threads , they would screw that up too as last month their PHP went bye bye for a good 10 days straight.

Charles, i did not know i could move the UBB classic i currently run (but can not see) to the Eve site once i sign up (am waiting for an answer on a support ticket to sign up).

i do have it backed up, that is one plus.

so, how do i move it to the eve hosting if i can't see it nor enter my control panel as it is on easyspace. i could have sworn i saw a link in one of the posts above to another thread on moving the UBB but my head is spinning. all the links to threads that come up when i search for "unix to windows" are broken (i have another website on a windows server i could temorarily try to install on).

jer...

hey Ron, thanks.

found that earlier and am on the case as i type this.

one question, in the restore (part 3) it says to install the UBB from the original files you used to install it to begin with but i do not think i have it. i found one on my pc but it says it is UBB6demo.zip . i am pretty sure i was running 6.4 (?) when easyspace screwed the pooch. how can i know for sure and/or how do i get my hands on a clean version to install. for the record, i am a standing member and have paid for access to the members area for a year, can i just download a fresh one there?

and what happens if i restore to the new server but under a different domain name? now it is on easyspace under multimadrid.com but i want to move it to the new server for testing and the domain on the new server is onspanishtime.com . will this throw a cog in the works? and do the directories have to be the same name wise. for example, on the current easycrap serve the non cgi directory is called "ubbgrfx" and my cgi directory in the cgi-bin is named "jersbbucgi", do the ones on the new server have to be named the same?

(ok, so that was 2-4 questions)

saludos,
jer...(aka multimadrid).

You should file a support ticket with infopop asking for the install file to preform a migration.

i already agreed to pay the rate they want to do the entire migration (VERY reasonable quote by the way <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> but i am waiting for a response on how to proceed.

sorry for all the questions <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

That's OK about the questions. That's why this community exists <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

In any case, it would probably be better to handle the rest of the migration related issues via your open support ticket. Infopop Support will take great care of you.
