Doing a search, member gets lots of results, but the search term IS NOT found anywhere in the threads returned?

What the heck?

Search is very commonly used in my boards, and 'usually' works.

If you have recently moved, or pruned posts, you need to rebuild the search index. Also, there are some words that are not indexed, I believe of, the, in are a few. I also believe it will only index like the first 300 or so characters of a post.

I would rebuild your search index and see if the problem disappears.

Thanks Ron,

I have been reluctant to do the search rebuild because it will shut us down for the duration - very active boards, and getting to be pretty big.

I am sure I don't move or prune enough to account for this - I mean, hundreds of returns of a search, non with the actual item in them. And posts with the item are not returned in the search results.

One problem has been figured out - that "s" at the end of the word is ignored, and that spaces between words are ignored - giving some results that were actually there, but not contiguous (eg: looking for Lyons - getting back "...ly on..." Like "only once" as an example..
But this is not the only search problem, nor an answer to all the bad results / missing posts.

( I have never pruned, and edits are a few a week, with a few thousand new posts a week)..

I'm running into this as well.

I have moved threads around but I have reindexed multiple times.

Running 6.7.3

Try a search on "5500HC" on Forum 5 you'll see a bunch work and bunch don't.

As a test, can you show us a topic in which that string exists? A quick test shows that searching seems to be working fine.

A search for "Ambisonic" reveals this topic, at the bottom of the first page: http://www.meridianunplugged.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=000944

A search for "final choise" reveals this topic, the oldest in the forum: http://www.meridianunplugged.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=000024#000000

The space thing is a side effect of how the indexing works. All non-searchable characters are removed from the string before indexing, then the indexed string is cut off at a certain admin-defined point, 210 characters by default. After the first 210 characters in a post, the remainder becomes unsearchable. You may find that is what's happening here.

Sorry I may have given the wrong forum number above.

Searching for 5500HC in Forum titled "Meridian 2005 (Closed)

Reveals a list of 20 items, some that work and some that do not.

From the seardch list, this one fails

http://www.meridianunplugged.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=001254#000008

This one works

I'm getting a topic not found error when I visit that first link... or is that the error you're complaining about? o_O

A simple reindex should fix this problem. If it hasn't, it'll be time to open a support ticket so we can take a peek via FTP.

Correct, that's the problem.

As I stated, I have reindexed multiple times.

How do I open a support ticket?
