Ok this one may or may not be as simple as I thought. I have the UBB Classic Software build I think is only for Windows NT server. My new hosting company is a Unix server.

What move steps do I need to make to save my board? Meaning, do I need to reinstall the cgi-bin stuff -- which includes the vars.cgi files and the "Modules" Directory or is this 6.7.2 build compatible to just simply move it with the change of the dns and then login to the adnmin cp of the board to change the paths defults.

My server that is currently hosting the board is a windows server. But, I am leaving them to go to a hosting company that is a faster and better server. But, its a unix server. I will look around this board for a little bit here on this support site for some more info on these unix server move overs for UBB Classic 6.7.2 ref. or older builds and determin the compatibilty, while I await a response.

Now, I know that there may be a half of dozen topics in this board refering to this area. But, I think for most people, they find it easier to just start a new topic rather than searching possibly through a thousands pages of old back date posts to find the topics that have these issues solved for them already.

Summary

Do I need to get a different file zip of UBB Classic 6.7.2 and re-install on my unix server of my new host? Or can I just simply move my current board if they are compatible to just move.

I know that Invision Power Board is NOT compatible ( I have a site that runs on that make of software as well) to just move like this. My hopes are that UBB Classic is easy to just move with DNS change over - even if its a unix server and the current installation is on a Win-server!

On the *nix, typically the path to perl is /usr/bin/perl. You should verify that with your host.

The easiest way to move your boards between servers is to follow the Guide at https://www.ubbcentral.com/support/docs/ubbclassic/UBB6_backup_transfer.html

I think it is not going to work - I looked into this a few years ago as I switched servers - and the problem I hit (dead end!) was case sensitivity - unix has it, win does not - as a result, all sorts of 'internal' paths in (at least my) win version of UBB had upper / mixed case, and would not, as a result work without changes in unix - ugly (for me anyway).

But YMMV - good luck.

You know what? I don't understnad any of this. So I will give my hosting company a call and have them login to my ftp and get the current board and move it for me.

BTW, when I moved to a new domain I moved to a domain on a windows server as well and moving my board was so easy. I simply ftp the two primary directories (cgi-bin and my non-cgi ) and ftp them to the new server and everything worked as soon as I went to my admin cp to change the url root paths for the d drive and non-cgi and guess what? It worked.

The moving of the ultimatebb.cgi file is the key to that connectivity to the db name all forums were changed to the new domain url in about one second. UBB Classic is still one of a kind and is the ONLY board software that allows such an easy move. You just change your paths in your cp and its done when you have ftp your database and your files. One thing that does NOT work though doing this is your UBB accereator. That must be reuploaded again using the defult orginal from your orginal download file zip of the UBB Classic Installer files... To anyone reading this remember that!

However, the switch to a Unix server is going to be a challenge. I have previewed the guide that Ron sent in a reply post above here. Guess what? I am truly lost!

The nuts and the bolts of the guide is:

1- Backup your old
2- Install a NEW instance of the same version on the new server
3- Restore back profiles, posts, etc.
4- Run all rebuilds

The guide just gives more detailed instructions on how to perform the move.

This is still not exactally what I need. Will I be able to to download the backup of my board from the win-server I am using now, and then upload the backup to my unix server when I change hosting companies? This is very important and I dont need guides as I have the guide from the link you sent me to get it, Ron. But, what I need is an answer if I can very easily transfer this board to a unix server I have now? Can I do it? Yes or No?

The link Ron provided you with is how all of us (in essance) migrate a board, it's straight forward and not nearly as complicated as you seem to feel it is...

Let me go in debth a little bit... You will have best results doing this with the SAME version of the UBB (as in it's a little more difficult say moving 6.5 when the new install is 6.7.3; if an upgrade is in order you should apply it prior to migrating then having the "new location" install as the newest fresh copy available)

1. Download a backup of ALL of your old forum (CGI, Variables, NONCGI and Memebers).
2. Install a FRESH install of UBB.Classic at the new location.
3. Copy your variables, noncgi (only the Forum folders are nessessary), members to the new location (be sure to update paths in vars_config.cgi)
4. Enter your UBB Control Panel and run all rebuilds in the maintenance section.

Done.

Can be done with a little time. It's not easy, but is straightforward, just takes some time <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
