I post at a gaming board relying on UBB 5.44b and lately every third thread seems to be eaten alive once it hits the second page.

They are working on getting new software (dunno which one) but at any rate, they need to fix the threads that are breaking..

Can anyone offer some advice?

This is a known architectural issue with the 5 series and some early 6 series versions. The only solution is upgrading to the latest release.

When CCnet had the 5 series, our mods (who aren't there any more) had a way of going in making repairs. Has the secret to that been lost to the ages?

One could manually play with the topic file to get it back into some sort of order... but that only occurs when the topic itself has simply become corrupt. The problem you are experiencing occurs due to memory limits on the server, not corrupt topics. Even upgrading to the last 5 series, 5.47e, might fix this...
