Help!

I hosted my NT site at Interland and then moved it to CI Host. UBB worked great at Interland but I'm having problems getting it to work at CI Host. The trouble with CI Host is getting permissions for the directories. I talked to the tech guys and even sent them the URLs for mapping CGI to Perl and the one for setting permissions.

Here's the short sweet note I got back:
-
Nothing within the cgi-bin can have write or modify permissions for security reasons.
-
They are using Win2000

I have my directory structure setup like this:

under /cgi-bin/ I have /ubbcgi/ which is: /cgi-bin/cgiubb/

I have my ubb directory off the root /ubb/

my member directory is in a directory off the root called /smile/ so it's: /smile/members

my control panel:
http://www.classicalmusicguide.com/ubb/cp.html

Can anyone give me any ideas on how I might set this up to meet the requirements of the tech people at CI Host?

Thank you!

Cliff

It sounds like you need to go up one more tech support level at CI Host to get someone who understands that write and modify are acceptable permissions for a forum script.

Perhaps you might give me some ammunition to use when I speak to them? I'm sure a few words of explanation about this from the UBB folks would help me when I speak to them about this. Maybe?

Thank you,

Unfortunately I have since read some not-so-nice reviews about CI Host and their lack of technical wizardry there...

Since you've moved to them tho, we'll give them a shot. Start with the UBB owners' manual, it will explain setting permission settings and general installation of the forum scripts. Basically the security concerns aren't in the permissions, they're in the scripts that run in the directories. UBB scripts are safe and stable to run in directories with full permissions set.

Post again if you have more questions <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Finally got them to change some settings. I've updated my General Settings with new paths. I've tried to Update Threads but keep getting this error:
CGI timeout
The specified CGI application exceeded the allowed time for processing. The server has deleted the process.

Any ideas?

The message board "appears" to work but it's very slow.

Upon running ubb_test.cgi, I get this error:
CGI Error

The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers. The headers it did return are:

Too many arguments for undef operator at D:Inetpubclassicalmusicguidewwwcgi-binubbcgiubb_test.cgi line 122, near "$errorlabel)"
Too many arguments for undef operator at D:Inetpubclassicalmusicguidewwwcgi-binubbcgiubb_test.cgi line 133, near "$errorlabel)"
Execution of D:Inetpubclassicalmusicguidewwwcgi-binubbcgiubb_test.cgi aborted due to compilation errors.

Any ideas?
Thanks

This is the latest from the tech at CI Host:

Can someone PLEASE give me some suggestions? Can I use a different directory that doesn't have to be off of the cgi-bin directory?

Please help.
Thanks,
Cliff

Hmmmm.. can you turn on your forums long enough to see what happens with their present permission settings?

He changed the permissions on the /cig-bin/ubbcgi directory so I can't open the board at all. I get the this error when I try to save the General Settings:

Unable to open UltBB.setup file for writing. Here is the error:

Permission denied

Check:

that the path D:/Inetpub/classicalmusicguide/www/cgi-bin/ubbcgi
exists
[Unix/Linux] That you chmod'ed UltBB.setup 777.
[Windows NT] That directory permissions for
D:/Inetpub/classicalmusicguide/www/cgi-bin/ubbcgi and

must the ubbcgi directory be under the cgi-bin directory? Can't I make it off the root where it wouldn't be a problem for CI Host?

if they have 30-day money back guarantee, ask them for your money, I too heard not-so-good reviews of them. Else you might want to change your variables path to something they permit writing to (by default its the UBBCGI directory). Members is better off above webroot.

You wouldn't be able to access your forum scripts from the browser if you moved them all off the web root.

I would consider asking for my money back as well and/or going up another notch in the tech dept. I haven't heard anything good about them.

Moving would be my last resort. Yikes!

Why wouldn't making the ubbcgi folder in the root directory work? All the other ubb folders are in the proper positions and are working ok. Is this a workable solution? Will ubb work this way?

I appreciate all your help.

If your host can set those type permissions for you on any folder, then by all means do it, kinda silly they wouldn't for the cgi-bin, as the name is rather meaningless on NT/2K.

We use ubbcgi off the root at ubbdev:
http://ubbdev.com/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi

If it makes them happier, name it:
