Personally I like sub-domains for everything
I generally recommend against using subdomains for content on your site, as it robs your search engine ranking for your overall site as subdomains are treated as seperate persauna's
Doesn't seem to affect the BBC
www.bbc.co.uk / news.bbc.co.uk etc...
