I would suspect that it is the size header you added.
300px is very wide for a side island.
Is it a island or a header banner in the html includes using tables?
Also you probably have different os and video drivers for a 27" screen, ipad,etc.
You need to pick one resolution and stick with it.
When and if we get the mobile theme it will probably work out for you.
