Doug: the word "Java" applies to a language, which we use to drive the board. JavaScript, on the other hand, is a lightweight scripting language (client side), which is used on the instant smilies and the other goodies you see when you post. Thus, you should be able to enable scripting while disabling applets, and be perfectly safe. This should also rectify the problem with the board. We do need to know what browser you're using so that we understand your particular challenges.
