Well, I have been at this for about 9 hours now.
Some things I have learned. When it says you need MySQL version 4.1 or greater, don't use the latest version (5 something).
Same with PHP, they dropped the MySQL extensions and you have to manually put them in.
Also learned threads 6.5.5 will not work with the latest MySQL.
Knowing all of this up front would have saved me at least 4 hours today, it needs to be put in the documentation.
Now, so here I am. I uninstalled PHP and MySQL and installed older version.
I'm now running MySQL 4.1.20 and PHP 4.1.1. The phpmyAdmin I downloaded is 2.6.4 because 2.8.2 doesn't work with the older MySQL/PHP.
Does this so far sound about right?
I can't remember if I installed PHP or MySQL first, but neither gave me an error message.
For the life of me I can't get phpmyadmin to work (it keeps prompting me for a user log in when I try to hit the index.php page) and the threads install.php page gives a failure on the database check page.
I can get the GUI that comes with MySQL to log in and using the same log in name doesn't seem to work.
Just for the record, I did set a root password and I also created another "super user" with the same access as root. I have not created any other databases/tables/etc.
This is on a W2K server.
Can someone give me a 1, do this, 2 do that, type of thing that actually works? I think they are leaving out what you need to do after installing MySQL. I also am not sure if PHP is installed correctly. I can see PHP pages, but when I installed the lastest PHP/MySQL/phpadmin it gave me an error about MySQL extensions not installed. Then I found out the extensions aren't a default install anymore in the latest version of PHP. This is one reason I rolled back to the older version as well. However, with some research I found with the newest PHP you have to go find the dll files and install them manually. Do you have to do this with the older versions? I only see 1 dll file in the php folder and there isn't an extensions folder. I did try the trick of copying the libmyphp.dll file into the windows/system32 directory and that did not help. I also have the path set in the environment variables.
Like I said, it is hour 9 and I'm getting a little tired. I appreciate some help if anyone has some.

Php really needs to be at least 4.3.0, and the threads 6 series runs fine on the current php 5 series. I am running threads 6.5.5 on php 5.0.4 and mysql 4.1.14, your mysql version is fine, but I'd update the php if it were me. You are leaving your site open to possible security issues if you don't at least use the most current 4 series php. 5 is the better choice if you have the choice. I've run forums on w2k servers for quite a while, I can tell you none of the setups run correctly out of the box, you have to copy .dll files here and there and edit your php.ini and my.ini files to get things right. The best start will be to install the most current versions of php 5.0.x and mysql 4.x http://www.php.net/downloads.phphttp://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/4.1.htmlAre you using IIS or apache for the webserver? Either works fine, just wondering.

As stated in the other thread, I myself run Uniform Server on my home (WinXP) development server.

I updated php to the same gizmo is using.
I would update to php 5 if I could figure out where to get the extensions and enable them.
I found a download on the net with some, but it didn't seem to work right with the original install.
Can you expand on editing the ini files, what exactly needs to be done?
As for the web server, it is IIS, we are all .net heads.

As an update, I installed php5 and now have the extensions installed.
The UBB threads installer made it passed the database test, but phpmyadmin is still prompting me with a username/password prompt.
I can manage the database with the MySQL GUIs and command lines, so I guess I'll just continue...

Well,
I have the board installed, no error messages. I guess my persistence up front paid off at the end.
I still never got phpmyadmin to work. I'll probably just delete it and use the MySQL GUIs instead, probably better from a security perspective anyway.
If anyone has helpful hints about phpmyadmin, let me know, along with what version.
I ended up with PHP 5 and MySQL 4.1.20.

it sounds like you have phpmyadmin set to check for a username/password. If you are just running on a test server, you can leave that open access.
