Okay, it sounds like a plan.

To get my thoughts straight -- Are you in favor of listing two different set of instructions? One for INSTALL and one for UPDATE?

I know it sounds a little redundant - but MIXING instructions for DIFFERENT actions into the same paragraph is one of the things that gets people confused - and - it slows down the comprehension of the subject.

In this day and age, can't we "afford" to have PERSONALIZED, or TAILORED, instructions for each activity?

I guess that you can see what my preference would be. grin

I know that it makes future corrections/updates to the instructions a little more work - but who are we serving? The reader or the editor? >double grin

Your thoughts?

I upgraded my forums today. I had no issues, however, I do agree that the instructions are a hard read. If I hadn't already used the upgrade script before I would have been confused as well.

I have to admit that clearer instructions for those not as familiar with the UBB file system would be a huge plus.

I was told in the past, the reason for that is to hire people to do the install.

Well, with the Wiki we have an upgrade instructions section elsewhere so yeah.

Bill,

I also agree that two sets of CLEAR instructions; one for a full install (new or reinstall) and another for upgrades would be most beneficial. Having everything in their logical order is essential, especially when something has to be done manually and in conjunction with what the installer does automatically.

Stan,
All you need to do is visit the WIKI.
We have been working on it for some time. All we request is some feedback to improve on it

Can someone explain this to me?

In the "instructions" it says
Quote:
If you uploaded a new copy of the "languages" directory in an earlier step, click the "I have updated my language files by hand" button. Otherwise, click the "Update my language files" button

Am I correct to ASSUME that the first step does NOT upload ANY files - and the second step overwrites ALL of them?????

Now--- if you are performing a NEW INSTALL, then you'd want to upload the entire copy of the "languages" directory. Obviously. So we can forget that scenario.

If you are performing an UPGRADE, then you might want to do one of two things:
1) If you've never made any Language changes, then Upload the ENTIRE directory and OVERWRITE ALL existing files. (The same as a NEW INSTALL.)

Or, if you have made some changes, then:

2) If you think that all of your previous changes are in OTHER language files, then you might want to just update the files with the NEW CHANGES. Or,
3) You need to MANUALLY add the list of changes to the listed files since they might be in with OTHER changes that you made previously.

So-- am I correct to summarize that you need to MANUALLY upload JUST the new changed files if you think that they don't overwrite any that you've made previously.

Or that you need to MANUALLY make the changes (ie. type in) to the files that you think might have previous changes. ??

BOTTOM LINE - there is no way to AUTOMATICALLY have the upgrade program MERGE the existing files along with the newly changed text?

--My head hurts.

As far as an upgrade goes I would follow my upgrade guide here on the forums, the only time that I wouldn't upgrade language files is if I made alterations...

If you made alterations - and DON'T upgrade, then you're not adding the NEW CHANGES from the new Version.

So -- don't you have to MANUALLY add the NEW CHANGES??

Yes but the updater is supposed to be able to make changes to the existing language files

Ahhh.. THAT'S what I'm trying to figure out. Does the updater actually MERGE the new file with the existing file?
Do you know that for a fact?

And are you referring to these instructions?
http://www.ubbcentral.com/doc_upgrade7.php

If so...
Quote:
The next screen will list the changes to the language files. If you uploaded a new copy of the "languages" directory in an earlier step, click the "I have updated my language files by hand" button. Otherwise, click the "Update my language files" button.

"I have updated my language files by hand" Does NOT DO ANYTHING? Right?

"Update my language files" does a MERGE - adding the NEW changes to the EXISTING file? Right?

It should, I've never done it though....

And no, I'm referencing my upgrade guide, I think that it's in the FAQ forum...

All I'm trying to do is find out which scenario is the actual path. It is NOT CLEAR in the written instructions.

I am in the same boat as Gizmo.
I have always allowed the upgrade script to upload the language files.
I think I did edit them once in version 7.0 but it was due to a error in the files and the next release corrected it.
So I opted to just overwrite it during the upgrade later on.

So bottom line is I don't know
But you could just backup that folder before you upgrade for just in case.

But better yet is a full backup before you upgrade(suggested)

Personally if their is a new key field or updates to the key field contents I can't figure out how the upgrade script would really know the difference. Unless it will report each and every field contents. so you can choose field one is okay to overwrite and field two is not
As I recall it just shows if the files are different.
Been to long since upgrading the last time.

A full upgrade (of db information and flat files) would be highly advisable when upgrading...

Yep, I'm in "general" agreement with everything said... I wish that I could say "I'm from Missouri" ha... (you know, the SHOW ME state.)

A couple of years ago, I did an upgrade and ended up wiping out ALL of my previous language changes. Didn't discover it for about a week or so... Then spent WAY TOO MUCH time trying to reverse analyze it...

I swore that I'd NEVER get caught in that situation again.

So this time, I'm diving into the instructions like never before... and guess what? -- They are terrible.

So rather than complain, I've begun rewriting them. I have my first draft done. Now I'm trying to add the SPECIFICS of the actions... So please don't take my questions as negative -- but rather just RESEARCH.

Question 1: If the two selectons give you results ONE and THREE in my diagram -- then why would you EVER select ONE for an upgrade? Why wouldn't you ALWAYS want to select THREE?????

With no changes -- ONE gives you an ERROR message...
and if you correctly make all of the manual changes -- ONE gives you the exact same result as THREE does.

So, again, why not ALWAYS select THREE for an UPGRADE??

Now it is my turn to be the Dunce.

Looked in FAQ FAQ forum and searched +Upgrade +Guide newer than 4 years.

No guide was found. How about one or two more hints Gizmo?
