I have to go with san's response here.

One of the deciding factors (one third of the
total) on UBBt was its crisp, clean look. The
oppressive number of graphics in the competition
(as well as the "toy" look it gave them) made UBBt
a clear choice. It really peeved me that their
software altered text (like this!) as its default
behavior. Sloppy stuff, changing "!)" to a
smiley without asking permission. I thought only
M$ made a habit of that sort of change.

I'd hate to see UBBt change to that sort of default.
