Actually, laptops are cheap now adays, my mom bought her hp and Compaq laptops for about $400 USD; 1gb ram, 2+ghz processors.

Myself, I spent $1800 on my laptop in 2001, 256mb ram, 40b hd, 1.6ghz "speedstep" (ie it randomly goes from 1.2ghz to 1.6ghz) p4 mobility processor...
